We received an email from Gotcher addressing some of the queries raised in this piece. In keeping with our HEXUS Right2Reply policy we have published it below, verbatim.
Scott, I liked your article on Fusion Media Explorer. I wanted to answer a couple of questions, brought up in your story.
It currently runs on Win 7, but the vast majority of our testing has been on Vista to this point. Once we have had a chance to a full QA pass on Win 7, and can ensure it will leave users with a good experience, we will let it loose. I am not honestly sure when that will be yet, as we are working on OEM readiness (which is Vista at the moment) right now.
You also asked about AMD LIVE! Explorer, and if we reused or repackaged that code for FME. I would be shocked if there was more than 1% carry over, to be honest with you. We learned a lot from building ALE, and we completely rewrote FME from the ground up. In order to get the type of performance needed, to do what we are doing, we needed a completely different and more efficient architecture.
Once you start adding in Facebook Friends photos, you can easily end up with 40K photos or more in the ribbon. This was way too much for our old infrastructure to handle.
Hope this helps a little. Thanks again for the story. Casey.
