Current workaround: don't edit files

If you're using Microsoft's Windows Home Server, you should be aware of a bug which causes the software to corrupt files. The flaw has been acknowledged and described by Microsoft in the following knowledge base excerpt:

"When you use certain programs to edit files on a home computer that uses Windows Home Server, the files may become corrupted when you save them to the home server. Several people have reported issues after they have used the following programs to save files to their home servers:

Windows Vista Photo Gallery
Windows Live Photo Gallery
Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
Microsoft Money 2007
SyncToy 2.0 Beta

Additionally, there have been customer reports of issues with Torrent applications, with Intuit Quicken, and with QuickBooks program files. Our support team is currently trying to reproduce these issues in our labs.

Make sure that you have a backup copy of any important program files before you store these files on a system that is running Windows Home Server."

Microsoft state that the cause may be a recently discovered problem with Windows Home Server's shared folders but currently has no fix available. The software giant states it is researching the problem and simply recommends users "do not use the programs that are listed in this article to save or to edit program-specific files that are stored on a Windows Home Server-based system". Hardly ideal.

Not an ideal situation , however it might help people to remeber to take regular backups !
It's obviously not as serious as is being made out, or there'd be mass threads on the issue, but as far as problems and bugs go, that's a stupidly serious one. How wasn't this picked up on during the (public) RC phase?

Hmm - while I can see your point of view (and I haven't read the article as yet, so I'm not sure exactly what the situation is) WHS is sold as a backup solution for home users (among other things). Anyhoo, I've not seen this on my box.
i'm not going to be smug on this issue. it'd be mean on the poor fools who bought into this tripe

Oh congrats on not being smug. :)

BTW I installed WHS and love it. I spend many hours at work tinkering with other OS and don't feel like doing the same at home. So how is your version of MHS running??….You do have a copy to make an informed opinion, right?
