H.264 support comes to Flash

Adobe Systems Incorporated announced yesterday the launch of its Flash Media Server 3 product family as well as an update for its Flash Player 9.

The new products bring industry standard H.264 video support and High Efficiency AAC audio capabilities, allowing Adobe to bring HD quality video and audio to its Flash Player.

Flash Media Server 3 aims to help content owners stream video and interactive social media applications whilst providing enhanced protection and ensuring delivery across multiple browsers and operating systems. It will be available in two versions:

  • Adobe Flash Media Streaming Server 3 for live and on- demand video streaming
  • Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3 for customised scalable video streaming services, plus multi-way social media applications.

John Loiacono, senior vice president of Creative Solutions at Adobe said in an official press release "Adobe’s award-winning Flash technology is driving the shift from traditional media consumption to engaging interactive experiences. By offering the Flash Media Server 3 product line coupled with new pricing options, Adobe is reducing the barrier to entry for content owners who want to deliver streaming video or real-time communications online. Whether they opt for interactive social media services or linear streaming, our customers can feel confident that their media is more secure and that the end-user experience is the highest quality."

The update for Flash Player 9, Update 3, is available immediately via Adobe's Get Flash Player website for Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms.
