PRESS RELEASE

New 15K RPM Enterprise Drive Deliver More Capacity, Performance and a Self-Encrypting Model

12 October, 2011, Neuss - Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division, today announced the launch of a new range of hard disk drives (HDDs), bringing to market the highest capacity available in an enterprise class 15K RPM small form factor (SFF) HDD . The 2.5-inch (6.4cm) MK3001GRRB HDD with 6GB/s SAS interface and 15K RPM spindle speed, combines high performance with a 300GB capacity and compact size. In addition, the latest HDDs include, as an optional feature, Toshiba's self-encrypting drive (SED) technology model, the MKxx01GRRR. The result is an innovative storage solution line-up combining industry leading performance and capacity, making it perfectly placed to meet the growing needs of modern enterprise IT environments.

Data is at the heart of all organisations today. It is, therefore, essential that businesses have immediate access to mission critical data. With an RPM of 15K, the MK3001GRRB/R HDD delivers fast access capabilities, providing enterprises with instant access to mission critical data. Businesses are increasingly turning to SFF HDDs to meet these criteria, as compact size as well as high performance becomes essential to combat datacentre space constraints, higher density and lower energy consumption.

The MK3001GRRB/R has been developed in line with Toshiba's ongoing commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Utilising the SFF instantly delivers the benefit of lower power consumption. In addition to this overall power saving, the MK3001GRRB/R series delivers a further power reduction with the addition of an Enhanced Power Condition State feature, allowing it to spin at a lower RPM when not in use.

Toshiba first entered the enterprise HDD market in 2010, bringing to the table its advanced technical capabilities and world leading engineering expertise to help businesses face the challenges of managing data storage. Toshiba's new range of SFF enterprise HDDs specifically addresses the challenge for high performance, whilst taking into account space constraints, security, lower power consumption and lower heat dissipation, aiding IT managers to deliver a high performance comprehensive storage solution for their organisations.

With files that encapsulate data from the digital universe expected to grow by a factor of eight in the next five years, it's critical that businesses put the right technology in place to ensure guaranteed access to their critical data, whenever they need it. Developed with enterprise computing features in mind, where operational reliability, capacity and high performance are a top priority, the 300GB MK3001GRRB/R is an ideal fit for data intensive applications such as high-end servers, storage arrays and other mission-critical functions.

With the MK3001GRRR model, the HDD series also addresses the growing demand for ultra-secure storage. Toshiba's SED technology can help OEMs and their customers address the growing requirement for organisations to ensure that confidential data is effectively protected at all times, even when not in use. Compliant with the industry-standard Trusted Computing Group (TCG) "Enterprise SSC" Specification, the drive is perfectly suited to organisations operating in high-risk sectors, such as financial services, which must take steps to safeguard the personal or sensitive information they possess, without any impact on performance.

"Businesses today are facing a mammoth challenge when it comes to data storage - it's not just about data volume but data access as well," said Martin Larsson, Vice President, Toshiba Europe, Storage Device Division. "The launch of the MK3001GRRB/R HDD series is a reflection of Toshiba's commitment to support organisations in taking steps to meet this data challenge. By combining industry leading performance and capacity, Toshiba have delivered a cutting edge storage solution engineered to meet the needs of modern business, enabling them to access mission critical data quickly and efficiently."

The MK3001GRRB/R and the MK1401GRRB/R boast capacities of 300GB and 147GB respectively. The series will be available in Q1 2012.
