10 September 2009, Neuss – Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division, the world leader in high performance, small form factor hard disk drive (HDD) technology, has launched four new 1.8-inch hard disk drives (HDDs) for use in the next generation of high capacity portable media devices. Delivering up to 160GB over a single platter, the move reinforces Toshiba’s commitment to delivering compact high capacity, small form factor HDDs for the ever evolving mobile audio visual consumer electronics market.

Toshiba’s MKxx34GAL series of hard disk drives offers an attractive lightweight solution to MP3 and personal media players. With unrivalled energy consumption efficiency of up to 0.0019W/GB, the 1.8-inch range of HDDs is ideal for use in audio devices where optimum battery power to support increased mobility is key. The 160GB model features an areal density of up to 467 gigabits-per-square-inch, and is the highest to date on any commercially available 1.8-inch drive, making it capable of storing up to 80,000 MP3 songs or 141 hours of DVD-quality video[1][1].

The demand for consumer storage on the go is at an all time high and manufacturers require the right components that meet these requirements. The MKxx34GAL range operates at 14 decibels when idle and just 15 decibels when in operation, making it the perfect choice for consumer electronics manufacturers wishing to provide a superior acoustic user experience and as a result, maintain competitive edge.

Weighing a maximum of just 48 grams, the new series of 1.8-inch drives include the MK1634GAL, MK1234GAL, MK8034GAL and MK6034GAL, which offer 160GB, 120GB, 80GB and 60GB of storage, respectively. The latest line-up of Toshiba drives ensures fast system performance with high areal density allowing users to transfer data and media promptly and efficiently.

Martin Larsson, Vice President and General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division, said: “It is vital that manufacturers of consumer electronics devices maintain competitive advantage in today’s turbulent economy. Consumers are cautious in their purchasing choices and it is up to the manufacturers to meet their requirements by choosing the right components that will create the perfect device to further empower today’s busy and mobile customer. Toshiba is continuously developing the products that manufacturers will need to meet such consumer demand, and our latest range of 1.8-inch HDDs is testament to this.”

The environmental impact of the new range of HDDs has been reduced by the elimination or reduction of certain toxic and hazardous chemicals such as halogen in its manufacture and is RoHS compliant.
