Confusion over availability
Potential PS3 owners, miffed at the lack of a price drop on the 60Gb PS3, which has seen a $100 price cut in the US, are now wondering just how long the £425 starter pack will be around. As usual, speculation and rumour on the ‘net is rife, with conflicting and confusing information coming in from all over.
The 60Gb starter pack will include the PS3, two SIXAXIS controllers and any two games from the European launch line-up, which offers wanna-be PS3 owners a great value pack. The big question is, how long is this offer going to be around?
Whilst normally no-one would question the duration of an offer, everyone is wondering about it because Gamespot Australia reported that the offer was only to the end of August and was a summer promotion. This seemed to be confirmed in e-mails sent out from Sony in response to gamers having forked out for a full price PS3 right before the offer was announced. But when that story came out an SCEE spokesperson stated that there was no time limit on the offer.
Perhaps Gamespot Oz got their info wrong and the offer has a time limit just in Australia? Maybe it’s all wrong and there’s no time limit anywhere in the world?
You have to wonder why new PS3 owners and potential PS3 owners are getting so uptight over this. Is it because the PS3, as good as it is, is still damn expensive compared to the Xbox 360? Surely the reaction to any news on price cuts or offers should be flagging to Sony that the PS3 is just the bit too expensive?
All I can say is that you’d be daft to look a gift horse in the mouth with this offer and yes, prices on everything drop over time. Whenever you buy anything expensive you’re always taking a gamble on whether you’re getting a good deal or not. So if you want a PS3 your choices are simple: take advantage of the Starter pack and get one now or leave it in the hope that come Christmas retailers will offer more attractive bundle deals or Sony do another pack... either way, as the saying goes, “you makes your choice and you pays your money”... just stop bloody dithering!
