Backwards compatibility not so bad on PS3? 1200 titles confirmed, but which ones?

We've all been giving Sony a bit of stick for the PS3's lack of backwards compatibility with the PS2, but did you know that we'll actually be able to play approximately 1200 older Playstation titles? (according to Softpedia). I remember complaining about not being able to play my old Xbox games on the Xbox 360, but after a month or so after launch, I'd totally forgot I even had an Xbox. It's true that backwards compatibility is a big issue for some gamers, but there are also appears to be an equal amount of people who couldn't care less one way or the other. For those who fit into the first category you may be slightly miffed that 1,200 older Playstation titles doesn't actually equate to much, when those in question are games that you may not play in a million years.

Softpedia is reporting, via German website Cynamite, that titles such as God of War, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, GTA: Liberty City Stories, Lumines Plus and my own favourite title on the PS2, Guitar Hero 2, won't be compatible with the European PS3. The German website tested out 12 of the most popular games on the PS2 and the only one that worked on the console was Eragon, the below par action adventure from Vivendi.

Of course, the PS3 hasn't launched yet so Sony has around a week or so to sort out the issue, but I have to say I'm extremely surprised that a game that came a close second in December's software sales chart to Gears of War isn't currently compatible.

We should soon see for ourselves the published list of older titles that will be compatible with the PS3 and we would like to stress that this is from a third party source so we can't be 100% on the validity of the claim.

Im pretty sure Phil Harrison said you'd need 1.6 version (out on March 23rd) firmware to play ANY PS2 games, and the guys from Cynamite were using 1.5, which seems strange - maybe they didnt know?

I don't know. I was just wondering if you did? They may have used 1.5.

Would be good to clarify, but I can't seem to find the answer.

“Harrison revealed that retail units will come pre-installed with firmware version 1.5. However, the backward-compatibility enabled firmware update (1.6) is being released on launch day, March 23. Harrison also promised that Sony would keep working to ensure the number of compatible titles increases with future firmware updates.”
