In true 'red paperclip' style, a seller on eBay is attempting to win a bet by making as much money as possible from a low value item on eBay.
The item in question, is a signed CD from, in the word's of the seller 'a friends band that is starting to gain popularity'. The idea is that while the CD may not be of mega-worth just yet, it could well be if they make it big.
A bit of back story is needed. Not so long ago, a Mr. Kyle MacDonald managed to trade a single red paperclip in for a house in Canada. It wasn't a straight swap, rather a case of climbing the 'trading ladder', but starting with one red paperclip, Kyle ended up with a house. His story is detailed in the one red paperclip blog.
So, our intrepid CD selling eBayer here, is attempting a similar thing, by taking the aforementioned CD, and making a lot of money from it. Presumably that money could then be used to buy a house in Canada, but we're not sure the seller is intent on such a parallel with the one red paperclip. Perhaps the satisfaction of winning a bet will suffice.
Still, the shameless better has an eBay listing for the CD, and if you've got an ear for upcoming indie/country/acoustic music, check out the Band's MySpace to listen in and see if you think the CD might one day be a collector's item.
