According to the weekly British trade newspaper, MCV,Sony are locked in talks with retail stores in a move that could see a controversial pre-order scheme for the PS3 hit the U.K. Sony want retailers to take a £150 deposit from customers who wish to guaranteee their PS3 on the day of launch.

SCE UK's David Wilson has confirmed in a interview with Games Industry.biz that Sony have indeed been talking to senior retailers on the issue, but he denies that they are close to enforcing the scheme and dismissed the rumour as 'idle speculation'.

If the scheme were to be implemented then Sony would undoubtedly hit their PS3 sales targets for launch due to less people willing to fork out that sort of money, after all how many kids have £150 in their back pockets to waste on Sony's new 'computer?'.

The PS3 has received much critisism over the high price point, mainly due to the fact that it's significantly higher than other consoles on the market. Sony have defended their pricing strategy by stating that the PS3 is not just a game's console but also a home computer.

I'll pass (unless you're buying :))
Apparently part of the plan is to stop people from preordering a couple of PS3's so they can make a profit on ebay.

With the Xbox 360 people could reserve many machines for themselves, which made it pretty unfair for the other people who couldn't get one on release.
I don't know why people keep moaning about the price.

When you compare it with buying all the add-ons for the XBOX 360, the price isn't all that different.

…as for the preorder charge, if your intention is to definitely buy one then this guarantees you a delivery on the release date.

I think this is a good idea
