Panasonic USA appears to be taking orders for the world's largest plasma TV set - a 103in model - even though delivery won't be until some time next year.

Just in case you hadn't realised, 103in is big. The set is "bigger than a double-sized mattress", according to Reuters, and "almost as heavy as an upright piano"! Dimensions are 2.4 x 1.4 metres and weight 215 kg.

The set is made by Panasonic's parent Matsushita and had a public showing in prototype form at this year's CES and at CeBIT. There are no clues as to the price - but if you need to know, you almost certainly can't afford one. However, the current world record holder, also from Matsushita but a mere 65-incher, sells in Japan for the equivalent of about US$7,500.

Wondering when Panasonic UK will be taking orders and at what price? Us, too, and when the company gets back with answers, we'll let you know.

While you wait, you may feel the urge to discuss your forthcoming purchase in the HEXUS.community.

Who on Earth needs something this large? Mr Magoo? I can see it being useful in the commercial field (for rock concerts, etc), but I don't see it being a practical addition to the home…

Matt.
I'm more than happy to try:)
…mounting it? heh. Would be interesting to see what kind of wall can handle its weight. Tbh you might be better spending the moolah on a top ‘end digital projector (with HDMI, DVI, Component inputs etc) and a remote controlled whitescreen thinggy…

I might do this some day, as I feel that my 42" plasma, does feel a bit ’small' from the seating distance in my HT.

Oh yea, when I was looking for mounting solutions at the local DIY, they offered me something called Anchor Bolts. They had some massive ones that needed a 13mm+ drill bit and they could take an estimated 40-50KG each according to the guy…I'd be more worried about the wall; right, so more bolts are better, right? that also means more holes in the wall thereby compromising its integrity :S

The point about kit like this - and Ferraris and personal jets - is that if the price is within your budget, and you want what it can provide, then your take on it is very different to how it would be if you couldn't afford it.

Me, I'll be getting two, of course.
