The BBC is continuing its trials of 3D broadcasting, with the announcement that the Wimbledon Men's and Ladies' singles Finals will be broadcast live in 3D.
The BBC is treating this broadcast as an experiment, so the success - or lack thereof - could be a deciding factor in the BBCs continued use of 3D as a broadcasting option. This will be the first time the BBC has made 3D broadcasts available to terrestrial viewers - albeit over Freeview HD, not standard terrestrial.
The 3D broadcasts will be shown on BBC HD, with BBC One HD simultaneously showing the finals in high definition, for those without a 3D TV or no desire to be subjected to 3D TV. A set capable of displaying 3D pictures will be required - there's no red/blue glasses option - with Sky an HD subscription is required, and Virgin Media customers will require a V HD or V+ HD box is neede.
In addition to being broadcast via Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media, the 3D coverage will also be shown in a number of cinemas, including the BBC's own Television Centre. Tickets are free, but limited to two per household, with applications being accepted via the BBC website.
