Good luck with that
Fusion Garage, the company behind the ill-fated JooJoo tablet, is having another go at the mobile device market.
Late yesterday it announced the launch of the GridOS, which is positioned as a new mobile operating system, but is based on Android, so appears to be more like a skin, or UI. To accompany GridOS there are a couple of devices, with their names linked to the size of their screens. So we have the Grid 10 tablet and Grid 4 smartphone.
Apparently there was some big viral marketing campaign leading up to this launch that had the tech press all aflutter, but didn't catch our attention. It was based around a fictional tablet company called TabCo, and asked ‘What is TabCo?' Now we know.
GridOS seems to be trying to do some novel things with the UI, basing it around an eponymous grid which you can swipe in all directions, as opposed to just horizontally in Android. There's a bit more about it on the Fusion Garage website, but not much at time of writing.
Fusion Garage has a lot of obstacles to overcome to make these products a success, chiefly demonstrating why consumers, developers or the channel should go anywhere near a relatively unknown company with a short and shaky track record. The tech hacks we follow on twitter seemed to be unanimous in their derision of the announcement, and there isn't even a press release on the website.
Here are screenshots of the spec sheets from the website.
