Welcome to the rest of the world

UK mobile users got a big extra dose of online auction fun today with the announcement that eBay has made its apps for Android and the iPad, as well as its selling app, available in Blighty.

This means you no longer need to be tied to your PC to make and follow bids on eBay of your a Brit who doesn't have an iPhone. We fall into that category and can confirm that the app installed just fine on our Android phone.

And it looks like this development was long overdue. "The popularity of eBay's mobile shopping applications is quickly spreading across multiple geographies," said Steve Yankovich, VP of mobile at eBay.

"More than half of eBay's mobile gross merchandise volume comes from outside of the United States. As we seek to reduce friction in commerce, we are taking advantage of the unique features of each mobile platform. In the case of our Android app, we're leveraging the Android's voice search capabilities to make searching easier and faster."

The selling app is still iPhone-only, though. "We are enabling eBay users around the world to window shop through the iPad and sell in seconds on the iPhone," said Yankovich. And Android still doesn't get a helpful vid.

Um… I've been doing this on Android since April…
eBay app for iPhone was released like in 2008? Took then awfully long to come to Android…

Dunno, maybe there were 3rd party ones or smth.
Probably thinking of Pocket Auctions.
I have bought stuff on ebay before through the browser… Seems like the iphone only needs all these apps because of the poor browser compatibility. I won't be installing this because the browser does the job well the few times a year I will need to bid for something on my mobile
Nice, shame my Orange branded Desire is rammed full of non-removable demos so I can't install a sensible number of my own apps on it. HTC, bring on the 2.2 Android update or I will be flashing it myself soon..
