Keeping up-to-date

Google has updated its Google Sync service for iOS, with a couple of new features aimed at improving mobile access to its services.

Sync for Gmail now offers the ability to search through all emails in your account, not just those downloaded to the device. Server-based search for archived mail was one of the major features Android offered over iOS previously, so it's good to see it available for Apple's handsets, too.

Less universally useful, perhaps, but curious in its omission before now is the addition of the ability to select a sent-from address in iOS' Mail app. Those Gmail users who manage multiple email addresses with a single email account will find this feature most useful.

Last but not least, it's not possible to for iOS device-users to accept, edit or decline invitations sent to a Google Calendar. Again, a minor update, but one that reduces the need to open up Google's web applications in a browser to get the full functionality.

These updates aren't major game changers, but they do add worthwhile functionality, and should help keep Google's iOS-orientated Sync offering in line with Android.
