F.E.A.R.

We can scare Nick Haywood with nothing more than a pair of rusty shears and a wicked smile, so getting him to review F.E.A.R. should see him in therapy for a good few weeks then

Right then let’s have a look at scary games. No, I’m not talking about those ‘make you jump’ moments in Doom, I’m talking about games where even though nothing was happening, it was scary… I’m talking about games that are the computer equivalent of The Exorcist where there’s a bigger reliance on atmosphere and story telling than on special effects and gore. I’m talking about games that are creepy, spooky and leave you feeling just a little bit disturbed, even when you’re not playing them. I’m talking about System Shock and its sequel or Clive Barker’s Undying and I could be talking about a new game to come and join this unholy trinity too…

F.E.A.R. or First Encounter Assault Recon as it’s more verbosely known, is Vivendi’s latest offering to the FPS genre and comes from the Monolith stables, the same crew who gave us, amongst others, the No One Lives Forever games, Alien vs Predator 2 and the largely overlooked but rather good Sanity: Aiken’s Artefact. So now they’re back again with what they reckon is an FPS with supernatural horror undertones… Do we have a new digital version of The Amityville Horror or is this just another Scream 3 with even less excitement?
