Econmic system adds strategic depth
We’re expecting many of the gameplay features that we were treated to in RTCW, including capture and hold objectives, hidden treasures, secret pathways and plenty of fast-paced nazi-killing action against platoons of guards and vicious otherworldly beasts. But how has the series evolved? One of the new additions is a supernatural realm called The Veil, which is set to add a new tactical element to the gameplay. In an interview with Kikizo, Steve Nix from id Software explains:
“The Nazis are trying to harness this power called the Black Sun, to allow them to create a weapon of unlimited power. In between the Black Sun and this world, is an alternate reality called the Veil. B.J. [Blazkowicz, the main character] has found these crystals in this town of Eisenstat, which is the only place they're at on earth, and that allows him to have four Veil powers, things like slowing down time, a shield which in its base form protects you from enemy bullet fire, and there's a kinetic enhancement that allows you to shoot through cover, and there's a mode that allows you to move slightly faster and see enemies in the dark, and ultimately when it's powered up you can see enemies through walls. Every Veil power also has upgrades to it that almost in some cases are like entirely new powers.
Wolfenstein also introduces a new economic system, which builds on the gold finding mechanic from the last game. Here we’ll be able to spend that gold on the black market to upgrade our weapons, choosing from the likes of sniperscopes or silencers that will ultimately give us an edge over our opponents. Indeed, id Software seem to have focused on providing a deeper first person shooter experience, one that gives us an array of tactical opportunities to utlise. This bodes well for the highly anticipated multiplayer component.
