Halo 3 has shattered the record and beaten its own target for opening days sales in the US, a title which was previously held by the movie Spiderman 3, which raked in approximately $151 million on the first day.

"Halo 3 has become a pop-culture phenomenon," said Microsoft's Shane Kim in a statement, after learning that the game had already raked in $155 million, 10 per cent more than Microsoft had estimated. "Not only is "Halo 3" setting sales records, it's also redefining entertainment. Within the first 20 hours alone, we've seen more than a million Xbox Live members come online to play Halo 3 -- the most active day in Xbox Live history."

The cash will continue to roll in thanks to a huge merchandising campaign, allowing gamers to buy almost anything Halo related, from key fobs to wallets.

The BBC are claiming that Halo 3 has made Ā£84million in sales in the UK in its first 24 hours of release.

no surprised with the amount of hype and media the game got. MS literely shoved halo3 down our throats
tbh I dont think the marketing has been that OTT. Its not been that much worse than other games, the main difference imo has been that microsoft have managed to penetrate the mainstream media whereas other big game releases (e.g. Grand Turismo games, GoW etc) are limited to games press, lads mags etc

Halo has been getting alot of coverage on the evening news, proper newspapers etc
Yes Microsoft have hyped Halo 3 but no more then blockbuster movies are hyped pre-launch.

I am impressed that a game has beaten out a blockbuster film in this way. It is truely is an interesting comment on popular culture.
i dont think the advertising has been that ott
Have to agree with Russ, ChrisJC and YorkieBen, the advertising for Halo 3 has been no worse than any other big game and no where near as bad as over hyped films. I saw more ads on TV for Bioshock than I have done for Halo 3.

It's a awesome game and deserves to do very well indeed.
