Cross platform multiplayer

Microsoft has today announced that XNA Game Studio 2.0, the game development platform for Xbox 360 and Windows, is now available for download adding more than 15 new features.

The major new addition is the ability to create cross platform multiplayer games and then bring them online.

The official press release states: Many of LIVE’s best features are supported by XNA Game Studio 2.0 with minimal to no coding necessary to activate them — features like matchmaking, which uses LIVE to find the best games for you to play based on your location and internet connection. Additionally, XNA Game Studio 2.0 fully supports game development with all versions of the Microsoft Visual Studio product line.

“When building XNA Game Studio 2.0, we wanted to offer everyone the opportunity to utilize the rich gaming environment of LIVE used by AAA developers for titles such as ‘Halo 3’ and ‘Gears of War,’” said Chris Satchell, general manager of the XNA organization at Microsoft. “We accomplished our goal with this new toolset, and, best of all, it remains highly accessible to students, hobbyists and pros alike.”

Microsoft claim that XNA GAme Studio has been a great success since its release last December, with 750,000 downloads and 300 universities using the tool.

I keep hearing about the XNA Studio, Microsoft seem to be pushing it a fair amount and on paper it looks very promising.

Does anybody on the HEXUS forums actually use it? I for one would buy a game created by “HEXUS residents”
additionally, does anyone know of a good introduction guide to the XNA platform and the vagaries of development within it's framework? I'd love to have a dabble but i don't want to spend hours getting a dev environment going to find out it's tosh…
I'd like to take a look at it at some point, does any one know if it's a free download? (I'm in work at the moment so I can't check?)
I think there's a license needed for to use it with the 360, or at least there was something about memberships on the XNA download tab in the 360 marketplace.

it's free. i had the other version before. I didn't really use it much. still not bad news. could make some pretty nice demos for pc or xbox. it's like multimedia fusion, but more advanced :D
