Super Mario Galaxy and Orchestra

HEXUS.E3 So sitting in the Nintendo booth we were given ‘carte blanche’ to work our way through their impressive list of Wii titles giving us plenty of time to have a go on everything and really get into the Wii remote and Nunchuk control system, giving both these and the games a thoroughly good going over.

So here, in no particular order other than the one we played them in, is a run down on Wii games… And no, we didn’t dally with Virtual Console games or we’d still be there now… but I’ll tell you a bit about that later.

First up and just for a laugh, is the Wii Orchestra. It’s not really a game as such, just a bit of fun, but it is a brilliant way to get an idea of how the Wii remote works. All you do is wave the Wii remote around like it’s a conductor’s baton… It’s simple, fun and whilst gamers will probably play it once and never go back to it, younger gamers and those who’ve never touched a console in their life will definitely get some fun out of it.

Now I’ve shown you the boss looking very self-concious (don’t just love a good stitch-up??), let’s have a look at another title, this time it’s Super Mario Galaxy. In this outing Mario leaps from planet to planet, collecting notes, coins and stars. You use the Wii remote to either grab objects in the game or to control Mario’s actions and Nunchuk is used to guide Mario around.

To be fair, it was while playing Super Mario Galaxy that we realized Wii isn’t looking to compete with Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles. The Wii isn't a graphics or processing powerhouse, focusing on realistic visuals or pumping more calculations… it’s not about being the console with the most ‘oomph’ it’s about being the console with the most fun… and as our time with Mario showed us, fun is what it’s all about.
