Sony has taken a bold stance to date, by refusing to drop the price of the PS3 so early in the console's life cycle, despite the slow sales across the Globe. However, there was recently a rumour that the company were looking at producing a 40GB PS3 at a much lower cost, which they could sell to the public at a much cheaper price.

Sony still haven't confirmed that they're working on the new console, but the rumour has been proven to be true by Spong who spotted a filing with the FCC (Federal Commication Commission) last week detailing the model.

According to a number of sources Sony has a big announcement up their sleeves in the next couple of weeks and it's widely believed that it will be confirmation of the cheaper model, with a launch date and pricing.

RumorReporter.com has now managed to obtain an unedited copy of the Federal Commication Commission report (shown below ) for the new Playstation 3, which shows a number of details about the model. They also claim that the new PS3 will ship with the Dual Shock 3 controller and could incorporate the 65nm chipset.

Surely Sony will be hoping to launch the cheaper model in the next couple of months, to capitalise on the busy Christmas period.
