We've been made aware that some PS3 owners are being caught out by a small clause in the warranty which states:

(2) THE PRODUCT IS USED WITH PRODUCTS NOT SOLD OR LICENSED BY SCEA (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, NON-LICENSED GAME ENHANCEMENT DEVICES, CONTROLLERS, ADAPTORS AND POWER SUPPLY DEVICES). YOU ASSUME ALL RISKS AND LIABILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH USE OF THIRD PARTY PRODUCTS.

The main issue revolves around users connecting their consoles to their TV sets with cable other than the PS3 or official Sony HDMI cable. If you do this your warranty is not worth the paper it's written on and you will have to pay for any repairs to the console should they be needed.

As you can see from the warranty clause, this also includes, controllers, adaptors and power supply devices. It sucks true, but it has always been part of Sony's policy on their Playstation consoles. Be careful folks, Sony customer services are asking those people who are phone up for repairs questions about which cables they are using. The simple way around it - don't tell them if you are using ANY third party accessories

That is shocking.
Hi everyone this is the new PS3, its great, its uber powerful and has bluray, just make sure that your eyes are Sony certified otherwise when you look at it your warranty is invalid

Sound about right? :)
As I pointed out to someone yesterday on MSN, if you bought a bundle deal from Game or Curries, you've voided your warranty by using the cable they supplied.

Blimey! That's a bit harsh.
Hang on, the clause states that you assume all risks and liabilities associated with the use of third party products. All that states is that if a fault is related to or caused by a third party product, then Sony won't cover you. It doesn't void your warranty. Even if you have used it with a third party HDMI cable or whatever, it seems to me that the onus would still be on Sony to prove that this was a cause of whatever problem you were experiencing.
