The shipment figures for the launch of the PS3 in the UK will be slightly less than was initially predicted by analysts. Three Speech predicted that around 300,000 of the European PS3 consoles available would be making their way to Britain, but Sony have now revealed that an allocation of 220,000 will be available on launch day.

The figure was revealed following on from comments made by Sony spokesperson, Dave Karraker who thought it wise to begin his Playstation 3 sales pitch by having a dig at Nintendo's Wii console. "Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else, but we believe the PS3 will be the console to attract hardcore, committed gamers, while Wii will do little beyond satisfying new and causal players.”

Karraker may have a point, but every time either Sony or Microsoft talk about their consoles, they just can't help trying to bring down the opposition with childish remarks.

Nevertheless, Sony and a number of finanical analysts are still confident that the PS3 will win the next-gen war."As consumers begin to purchase a second console, we think that market shares will normalize, with Sony capturing around 45% of the total market, Microsoft capturing 35%, and Nintendo capturing 20%," said Michael Pachter and Edward Woo,a US firm who have recently produced a 188 page report on the subject.

The PS3 goes on sale in the UK on March 23rd.

They never seem to make their PS3 product stand up on its own. MS are just as bad though.

I can't remember Nintendo staffers said bad stuff about the competition, I am sure its out there but its not like the current slanging match.

To be honest I think with an American heading up the company now it seems they have change dtheir marketing tact and come out more aggressive. The product placement in James Bond was also pretty overt and I can't remember Sony doing that before.
So what they really mean is: “We fear the PS3 is actually going to sell much less well than we expected, so rather than have them sitting around on shelves we won't ship so many”.

On the other hand

Thats why people queued for days to get the wii and it continues to sell out 2-3 months after launch and the PS3 is sitting on shelves collecting dust in many places. Even if the wii is an impulse buy its a sale none the less, if sony had impulse buys they would be landed right now even it if is costing them.

It seems to me that sony are losing integrity with almost everything they say these days. They are like big kids, and MS aren't much better.
The very fact that they have made such a statement to me shows their worried about the inferior wii.

I also agree with George… I can't recall Nintendo saying anything to slag the compo off. They seem to be quite passive as they let Sony and MS slog out out while they continue to sell heaps of wiis.
