Pricing confusion

Following on from yesterday's news, regarding the Playstation 3 being priced at between €499 and €599 in Europe, Sony have stepped forward to claim that the prices stated were "a mistranslation or misunderstanding of the discussion, which was actually focused on the relative value of PS3 as a Bluray Disc player."

These comments were made by SCEE corporate communications director Nick Sharples, who told GamesIndustry.biz that "at no time did he suggest or indicate a specific price point or price range for PS3, and any reports that he did so are incorrect."

He continued by saying that the " PS3 would be expensive when one looked at the current price of a video games machine, at far below 500 Euros, but extremely good value when looking at the BD and HD technology inside."

So, wer'e still all very confused over the price point of the PS3. Roughly translated Sharples is suggesting that it could cost less than €500 , but it could cost more than €600, all dependant on the price of the Blu-ray players.

It was the French media who translated Fornay's comments and spread the word around the internet regarding the pricing of the PS3.

Obviously, but whether it was understood or not, I cant see the PS3 being under 349.99 of your english pounds, most likely 399.99 despite the ‘misinterpretation’
whys that? i'd have thought it'd end up the same price as the premium 360 package to remain competitive.
I think the price will be alot more than the 360 mainly due to the fact that microsoft are a bigger company and they can afford to make lesser profit margin but this is just my personal opinion and may be total rubbish ..

First of all, MS dont mind making a loss, the Xbox, apart from the couple of months it launched I dont think its ever priced more than the PS2, despite being newer and having better tech inside.

Apparently, each Ps3 is goin to cost 900$ each to make, which is about 500-550 quid - Although they must these days expect to make a loss on a system, they of course will try and minimise it, matching the X360 price of 280, would be a loss of the cost of them system on each sale if sonys figures are to be belived, and blue ray doesnt fall in price ridiculously (Dont see why Sony, seing as they make blue ray cant just knock them out for cheap as chips, the drives are the same as a DVD drive that costs pennies now to make, bar a laser, which cant be too much if mass produced?) , anyway, so id say at least 300, probably 350, and possibly 400+, even at 400 theyll be making a loss (Apparently) but nowhere near as much as if they sold it at 280. 350 would be a compromise as I think the amount of people buying it at that price and buying software for it would be just about acceptable without being too pricey
I dont think any console has been made at a profit for a very long time…
