We knew it was coming at some point, but finally Sony has confirmed that a movie download service for the Playstation 3 will launch this summer.

Kazuo Hirai, head of Sony Corp.'s video game unit, said that “the service will be offered in Japan and Europe at later dates, although details won't be available until next month.”

It’s believed that the service will be unveiled in full at E3 in July.

The new PS3 service will go head to head against Microsoft’s Video Marketplace on Xbox 360 and Apple’s iTunes movie service which launched in the UK in June
