11 million target out of reach?

Following numerous promotions and Christmas price reductions of the Playstation 3 across Europe, Sony Playsation president Kaz Hirai has revealed that the company has sold 1.2 million Playstation 3's over the holiday period. Coincidently, this is the same figure that was quoted for North American sales earlier this month for the same 5 week period, 23rd November to December 31st.

The sales figures don't bode well for Sony, who has previously estimated that they'll reach 11 million sales by the end of the financial year in March. However, Hirai still believes that Sony has a chance of reaching that figure

"We haven't made any conclusion whether we have to give it up", he told Bloomberg."It depends on how aggressively dealers buy our PS3 inventory.''

It doesn't need an analyst to predict that Sony are going to struggle to meet this target but as usual they've stepped forward to give their tuppence worth. Bloomberg has stated that analysts are predicting that Playstation 3 sales will be closer to 8 million than 11.

"It's an industry consensus that PS3 sales will fall short of the target,'' said Mitsuhiro Osawa, a Tokyo-based analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities Co.
