Though we'll be able to play Java-based games on the SEGA Vision, its main function will be as a portable media player, with features including a camera, video and music playback,an integrated TV tuner, voice recording functionality and an e-book reader.
Sega moved out of the hardware business in 2002 and, after being faced with debt and competition from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, it discontinued its Dreamcast hardware. Having already released and failed with its own handheld, the Game Gear, it seems surprising that SEGA has decided to move back into the market where it has not done particularly well in the past.
A video showcasing SEGA Vision was doing the rounds, having initially surfaced on The Register, but suspiciously the video has now been removed from You Tube.
Does SEGA Vision really exist? If so, why? Can SEGA really compete against the likes of the PSP and iPhone?
