Logic3 go heavy metal and get some respekt!
CTS 2005 was a much more relaxed affair than CeBIT, as most manufacturers had shown their new stuff for the first time over in Germany and were now just having a cruise. However, Logic 3 had a couple of new gizmos to show which are well worth a mention, purely on the basis the enthusiasm of Michael Kirkham and Paul Croucher, who showed them off to us.
First off is the Logic 3 Metal Pad for all the Playstation series. This is not for the ‘intense’ gamer who throws his game pad at the screen in disgust. With an all metal alloy construction this pad weighs in at a meaty 400g, more than enough to smash your TV or stun the cat for a couple of days.
Though it’s a meaty weight, it doesn’t feel overly heavy and in comparison to a standard Sony Dual Shock controller it feels a lot sturdier. There’s absolutely no flex either, so those intense moment in Splinter Cell won’t see you twisting the controller out of your own hands as you wrangle around in a gaming frenzy. Finished with a brushed aluminium effect, the pad has moulded finger grips underneath and doesn’t get slippery even in the sweatiest of hands.
Other features include a macro button allowing you to assign up to 12 actions to one key press, making life far easier and allowing you to cheat your mates mercilessly with your funky metal pad. Look for this on sale through Amazon, Gameplay, Special Reserve and independent retailers at £29.99… not a bad price for something as solidly built as this.
The other notable bit of kit is the Assault Light Rifle, as modelled in close up here by Paul, a man who, even to Team HEXUS, knows no shame! Copying the design of Heckler & Koch's MP5K, this light gun looks the shizzle.
Dropping into full ‘street gangsta’ mode, Paul extolled the virtues of his impressive weapon. All the buttons of a standard controller are built into either the body or fore grip allowing complete functionality within the game. Uniquely, the Assault Light Rifle has a laser pointer which projects onto the screen to give you superb accuracy, and this is even adjustable, just like real scopes, to be able to zero in accurately when standing different distances from the screen.
The rifle is compatible with both X-Box and PS2 and comes with more cables than a cable shop in a cable sale frenzy… well, four… to hook the gun up to your system and get blasting. For more realism, the gun has a built in recoil system and feels pretty hefty, especially when the battery pack (cunningly disguised as the magazine) is loaded up to power the laser sight. And for smaller hands, this full size rifle has a removable stock to turn it into, in Paul’s words, ‘the Wood Green special’. It was at this point we hurried away as he started muttering about being a straight up menace and bustin’ caps in yo ass… The Assault Light Rifle will be available from the same retailers as the game pad from 6th May priced at a very reasonable £39.99.
