Back to World War II

Following the announcement that Call of Duty 4 was the biggest selling game of 2007, Activision has confirmed that the next installment of their multi-million pound selling franchise will be ported to Wii, DS and Playstation 2, in addition to the expected Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions.

In a financial conference call yesterday, Activision confirmed that the title will be released before March 31st, 2009 and will not follow on from Call of Duty 4's modern warfare theme, but will instead have a World War II setting.

Activision has also confirmed their line up for the rest of the year and into early 2009, including a new Spider-Man title and a revamped Tony Hawk's game.

Good news in that the Wii gets some much deserved big franchise action, BUT why oh why have they decided to go back to the WWII setting??? As much as i liked the old cod games, this has taken a step into another direction scenario wise, and I cant see the logic of them going back

Disclaimer: Its late and maybe i didnt read the article properly. But I swear they said it… Read it and back me up!!

you dont want them to go all “COD 2142” or something with us do you? nooooo
No, that would be a bit too extreme, but i think that the potential to create a better cinematic gaming experience (which lets face it is what the cod series is about) is greater if they kept it present day. The technology, vehicles and weaponary availiable to point the picture are a bit broader.

To flip your question on its head, who would actually like to storm another beach? Or blow up some more flak guns? I know I'm being general - and i did think that Moh Airborne was decent, so I acknowledge that the WWII genre isnt dead, but just seems a bit odd. Cod4 has been such a roaring sucess that i thought that they would at least produce one more like that.

Oh well - it'll still be great whatever really. Gotta love this series havent you! Feel like getting the original and cod2 out of the cupboard now…
i agree, im not knocking the WW style games as they were indeed fun but COD4 for me was a massive leap forward in modern FPS playability, i still cant get enough of it.
would be good to see them make another title in this kind of time but with more branching scenarios like in COD4 with the sniper mission ect, what about a stealth infiltration, helicopter sniping support (im just spitballing with these ideas) i just loved the latest installment and would like to see more from this era before going back to WW themes
Well it's being developed by Treyarch so you can pretty much predict already that it's going to terrible.
