Guitar Hero – First Look

At CES 2006 we were treated to what had to be every bloke’s dream in the form of Guitar Hero, a totally awesome new game for the PS2.

Taking North America by storm but still unheard of over this side of the Atlantic, Guitar Hero could well be every bedroom rocker’s dream come true as it lets you play those screaming guitar solos without ever having to learn how to play a real guitar. So we sat down with John Tam and Corey Fong to have a closer look at the latest hot game sweeping across the US.

At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking Guitar Hero was aimed at kids as the game comes with a miniature plastic guitar for control in-game. This might give it the appearance of being a bit childish but get over the dinky look and feel of the guitar and you’ll soon see that Guitar Hero is just what all us ten-thumb guitar wanna-bees have been waiting for, in fact, it even removes that embarrassment factor of being caught doing a full on Pete Townsend with a tennis racket…

The big appeal of Guitar Hero is that is places you in the middle of some classic rock songs with none of those years and years of practise and learning to play a guitar… you just pick up the guitar controller and then strum along to the tune as it appears on the screen. Working in a way very similar to dance mat games, you have to hold down a colour button on the guitar neck at the same time as strum the rocker button on the main body of the guitar in time with the coloured dots as they head down the screen. Sound confusing? In that case, watch the video below to get a better idea of how it works.
