Give me my PAC code please, now!
Ever tried changing your mobile network whilst wanting to take your number with you? I have, and whilst the process in itself has been fairly smooth (albeit with plenty of sales people trying to convince you otherwise) it often takes a while for the entire process to be completed.
At present, mobile networks are required by Ofcom to complete any such switch overs in a maximum of 5 days. Looking to speed up the process, Ofcom had earlier decided to reduce the allowed time for a switch over from 5 days to 2 days as of April 1st 2008. Not wanting to stop there however, Ofcom has cranked it up quite drastically and two hour transfers for mobile numbers must now be implemented by September 1st 2009.
Ofcom Chief Executive, Ed Richards said "Consumers deserve a quick and easy process for switching while retaining their number. These measures will promote competition in the UK mobile market and act directly in the consumers’ interest. Our new rules set tough but achievable deadlines to put new systems in place and I look to the industry to implement them effectively".
