TomTom has made available a long-awaited update to its Apple iPhone app with the release of version 1.3.

The update, now available from the Apple app store, introduces support for traffic updates and Google local search - features traditionally associated with TomTom's dedicated navigation devices.

Real-time traffic information, provided by TomTom's HD Traffic service, has been a commonly requested feature for TomTom's iPhone app, but its arrival does come at a cost. An annual subscription to the service is currently charged at £37.99, with users able to make their purchase direct from the iPhone or online via the Apple store.

What's useful is that TomTom also has HD Traffic packages available for less frequent drivers. Users can opt to purchase a traffic subscription for just a day, a month or a quarter, at a cost of £0.59, £4.99 or £11.49, respectively.

Version 1.3 of the TomTom iPhone app also implements the latest available maps, automatic music fading between voice instructions and the ability to manage your locations from other applications and websites.

The release is available as a free upgrade to existing owners of TomTom iPhone app, whilst new customers can purchase the app at a cost of £54.99.
