Panasonic announce rear-view parking sensor

If you haven't been reversing your car since you passed your driving test simply because you don't like doing it, then your fears may be put to rest by Panasonic.

The Japanese electric products manufacturer has announced a rear-view camera, product number GP-PD107, that includes a small camera that fixes to the rear of your car and a 3.5" monitor that displays what's behind you.

Though the idea itself isn't a new one, this is the first standalone unit that I've seen. I've recently been driving a Lexus RX300 which has a near identical system built into the dash, I must confess, I think it's the best thing since sliced bread! I've even noticed that I reverse a whole lot more than I used to do, it's just so easy now.

Panasonic's GP-PD107 is to retail in Japan initially at a cost of ¥40,000. That equates to approximately £175 which is a lot to pay for convenient parking. Panasonic have helped sweeten the deal though, the unit also features the ability to connect a portable media player for in car entertainment.

Bt just how wide is that camera lens? You still wouldn't be able to see a kid running across to get a football from across the road.
Secondly the screen will most probably need to be fitted into the dashboard on the passenger side, but once you watch that I'm sure the rear view mirror won't get looked at.
