The news

Dutch outfit Final Sound Solutions reckons it produces the world's lightest and flattest speakers and says that its latest electrostatic flat-panel model, the 300i, is, like its stablemates, especially well suited for discreet use with home cinema systems.

The 48in-high 300i - pitched at a stiff €1,800 (£1,219) per pair - comes with a floor stand but can, optionally, be wall-mounted and readily hidden from view. It's a mere eight inches wide - and just one inch deep - and said to offer a frequency responses of 95Hz to 22kHz (+/- 3 dB).

Electrostatic speakers usually need to be driven by very powerful amplifiers but the S300i is an addition to Final Sound's Inverter range of electrostatic units that are said to use technology that lets them work well even with amplifiers rated at just 50W per channel.

Furthermore, the company claims that each model in its Inverter range offers a broad stereo image - rather than a narrow, hot-spot stereo image area that has been complained about with some electrostatic models.

Also new to the range are two subwoofers, the S110 (€499/£338) and S220 (€999/£677), each with a claimed frequency range of 25Hz to 220Hz (+/- 3dB).

The S110 is described as an 8in long-throw, 100WRMS down-firing and bass-reflex subwoofer. It has variable phase adjustment between 0 and 180 degrees and an inverting switch.

It's bigger brother - the front-firing S220 - is a 12-inch long-throw sealed enclosure said to be rated at 220WRMS. The extra for the S220 also buys a "Class T" digital amplifier with a linear power supply and variable room-gain compensation.
