DRM is causing trouble once again, this time for BenQ. The company may have to delay production of its Blu-Ray disk drives, amidst issues implementing the DRM technology designed for the new discs.

This isn't the first time that DRM and copy protection have caused hassle. The number of computer games experiencing CD check related issues is increasing and protection of audio CDs has resulted in some audio players being unable to read the CDs. However, what's interesting here is that it's a manufacturer having trouble.

According to Digi Times the issues may also result in Taiwanese optical disc manufacturers delaying production. This could be a blow to Blu-Ray, especially given that HD-DVD technology is on track, and as reported by DVdoctor, production lines of DVD media are up to the task of producing HD-DVD with few changes.

Could the end result be that Blu-Ray comes second to HD-DVD thanks to a DRM disaster, despite its superior capacity? Perhaps DRM is more trouble than it's worth.

Blue ray needs long delays, like another 4 years.

the consumer market is still getting to grips with DVD, blue ray may be taken up by techies such as us, but its gunna fall flat on its face in the wider world.
Blue Ray may be good for professionals, and next gen games, but who actually needs them for movies etc, when DVD's hold more than enough for movies+bonus features?

Which wont be in the average home for another 10 odd years….
Your average Argos / Currys / Dixons buyer is still going to be buying a basic CRT based TV.
