19th July 2007 – Britons spent over £7.8 billion on consumer electronics between May 06 – April 07, equating to an average of £311 per household. London led the spending with a massive £431 per household spent in this period, while households in the South West spent only £245.Highlights:
o Per household, Londoners spend a third more than every region except Anglia, Yorkshire and South England. By region, London spends twice as much on consumer electronic products than any other region
o If London is excluded from the calculations the average spent per household falls to just £280
o Spending was lowest in the South West, with just £195 million being spent in the year to April 07
o Spending in the North East was also only £323 million
o Spending in Scotland is almost four times lower than the spend in London
o In terms of % growth in the year to April 2007 Anglia and the North West were the fastest growing regions in terms of the amount of money spent on consumer electronics (21%), closely followed by South England (16%) and Lancashire (14%)
.
o London was actually below the national average in terms of growth rates, with just 8% growth year on year, compared to the national average of 10.6%
John Binks, Commercial Director GfK said "This data demonstrates that London is the powerhouse for consumer electronics purchasing, with consumers visiting London to purchase high ticket items and a boost being received from the tourist trade
"While London has the highest population density and spending, growth in this spending is slowing while areas such as Anglia and Yorkshire are growing more than twice as fast"
