PRESS RELEASE
LG demonstrates its commitment to reducing its environmental impacts by certifying its carbon footprint and earning the right to display the Carbon Trust's Carbon Reduction Label
London, 7th July: LG Electronics' 47LW5500-ZE and 47LW550T-ZE CINEMA 3D TVs have become the first TVs in Europe to carry the Carbon Reduction Label, which certifies the carbon emissions from every stage of their lifecycle, from production, to transportation, preparation, use and disposal. By using the label the company is also committing to make further reductions of emissions from the TVs.
Il-geun Kwon, head of LG's LCD TV R&D Lab, said:
"This certification marks an important step forward for us in terms of improving our environmental brand image in Europe. Europe is the world's largest TV market so it is important that LG is able to communicate our commitment to developing world-class products using the most responsible materials and manufacturing processes to its European consumers."
The carbon footprint across the lifecycle is 17g/CO2 per hour of use of the TV, in the UK. Displaying the Carbon Reduction Label reflects LG's pledge to reduce greenhouse gases. It also demonstrates the progress and commitment that the Korean company has made to reduce the amount of carbon associated with the entire lifespan of these TVs, from production to distribution to use and disposal. Equally important, the award reflects the changing priorities of LG's customers - both in Europe and elsewhere - to put greater emphasis on environmentally-responsible manufacturing.
With climate change playing an increasingly more important role in consumers' purchasing decisions, low carbon products have a clear competitive advantage. Recent research on UK consumer buying habits, commissioned by the Carbon Trust, revealed that 47% of shoppers are more likely to choose low carbon labelled goods over non-labelled and one in five (21%) would pay more for carbon labelled products.
Harry Morrison, Director, Certification, the Carbon Trust, said:
We congratulate LG on calculating the carbon impact of this product across its lifecycle and achieving certification. LG can now communicate the carbon footprint of the product in a simple, robust and engaging way using the Carbon Reduction Label. The Carbon Reduction Label further highlights LG's ongoing commitment to reduce the carbon emissions of its products."
The Carbon Reduction Label
- Since 2007, the Carbon Trust has worked with numerous brands and individual product lines to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of everyday household items, as well as business facing brands. Many of these brands including Kingsmill bread, Tate & Lyle sugar, Quaker Oats, Dyson, Cemex, Morphy Richards and dozens of Tesco own label products now carry the Carbon Reduction Label on their packaging to show consumers they are committed to reducing their impact on the environment.
- The Carbon Trust designed the Carbon Reduction Label to help companies communicate the impact of their product carbon footprinting work to consumers. Companies that display the Carbon Trust's Carbon Reduction Label (on pack, online or elsewhere) are making a commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of their product or service.
- The carbon footprint of a product or service is the total carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted during its life, from production to final disposal.
- The Carbon Reduction Label currently appears on products worth £3.2 billion in annual sales
