TV in 3D
Sky will launch Europe's first 3D channel on 1 October to enable Sky+HD customers with 3D ready TVs to watch films and sport in three dimensions.
Highlights to air on the channel's opening weekend include live coverage of the Ryder Cup as well as big-grossing 3D films Bolt and Monster vs Aliens.
Sky said the channel's line-up will expand in the run up to Christmas with the following 3D films lined up: Alice in Wonderland, Ice Age-Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Coraline, Fly Me To The Moon, Harry Potter and The Half Blood Price and My Bloody Valentine.
The company has entered into deals with Disney, Fox, Universal, Warner Brothers, Paramount and DreamWorks to bring more 3D films to the channel.
Sky will also offer live sport including Premier League football games from launch, while more arts and entertainments programmes available in 3D will be announced closer to launch.
However, only Sky+HD viewers with a 3D TV will be able to receive the channel, which is available to Sky's top channel and HD pack customers free of charge. No set-top box upgrade is necessary. The channel is compatible with all 3D TVs by Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic and works with both active and passive formats.
Jeremy Darroch, Sky's Chief Executive, said: "As with High Definition, 3D is set to transform the way TV is enjoyed in homes nationwide. Following hot on the heels of the success of 3D cinema, Sky customers will now be the first anywhere in Europe to experience 3D TV from the comfort of their living rooms."
Sky has been promoting its 3D wares in about 1,500 pubs across the UK and Ireland since launching a 3D channel in April which broadcasts sports fixtures.
