Flying the nest

Unperturbed by the legal furore surrounding its creation, newly formed semiconductor foundry GLOBALFOUNDRIES has added a senior VP of sales and marketing to its growing executive team.

Jim Kupec was most recently chief operating officer of eSilicon, an ASIC manufacturing and design services company. Prior to that he was president of semiconductor foundry United Microelectronics Company (UMC) and spent 15 years at electronics components and Soc maker Cypress.

Among his key roles will be the acquisition of customers other than AMD, from which GLOBALFOUNDRIES was spun-off.

"The addition of Jim's extensive foundry experience, on both the supplier and customer side of the business, underscores our commitment to building a world-class global foundry services provider," said Doug Grose, CEO of GLOBALFOUNDRIES.

"GLOBALFOUNDRIES is entering the foundry market at the right time and with the right business model to change the landscape of the industry," said Kupec. "More importantly, we're entering the industry with the right mindset and resources. Our investments in leading edge technology and in supporting infrastructure will ensure the success of our customers."
