Hypocrisy

It's not clear what Pichai thinks those unintended consequences might be; maybe he's just trying to make Google look less vindictive in this action. Either way, it looks like Microsoft has got a serious fight on its hands to keep IE bundled with Windows.

It's quite amusing to look at the comments on the blog posting. Most of them accuse Google of some degree of hypocrisy in joining the party and they point out that much of the default software on Google's smartphone OS - Android - is made by Google.

They also ask why this precedent isn't extended to any companies that bundle other software with OSs, like Apple, Nokia, RIM, etc. One reason is probably that none of them have the dominant market share that Microsoft has in the PC OS market, but fair point nonetheless.

It may just be a complete coincidence but Google has chosen the same day to announce the launch of the latest version of the Google Toolbar for IE. Hmmm.

Very easily.

To quote myself in the Mozilla thread about this (although i have now spell-checked this quote :)):

Actually, MS could make configure things that would allow you to download any browser you choose, even presenting you with a list, without having “Internet Explorer” available.

All the components of IE would still be there, like the rendering engine, HTTP components, etc. These are needed for Windows update and much of windows itself after all.

On first run, just have a screen appear which is really a page from the MS site asking which browser you would like, they are all available to download, including a small configuration file that enables IE as a full browser.

Job done.
I do hope that if Microsoft is fined for including a browser with its operating system and forced to remove it that all other OS's should also be forced to remove browsers. I am looking at you OSX, Linux distros (and even Android, WinMo) and every other modern OS which contains something as vital as a browser. But i doubt that this would be work as there would be not as much FREE money involved for the damn bureaucrats at the EU! The next step will be harassing Microsoft for bundling notepad or maybe having cmd as part of its OS…

Who would manage this list? Who would check and see all the locations are still valid? What about if a browser goes belly up and no longer exists… What about if a browser you want is not there? You dont have to use IE but you can use it to find a browser of choice… Like every other sane person on the planet can see!
Yes funkstar, but that is retarded.

People like me out of principle would create my own browser thats just an IE control hosted in .Net (would take about 30 seconds to make this) and release it as a competitor to the firey ferrit, and as such demand it be included.

How could you say no?

Something tells me that if Microsoft did this, all other less popular browsers that aren't on the list would start suing them.
