Ready to rumble

Semiconductor manufacturer Global Foundries has announced it has completed the formation of its executive team with the appointment of Ron Dickinson as head of enterprise quality.

Dickinson joins from chip maker Freescale Semiconductor, where he was director of operations and GM of its fab in East Kilbride, Scotland. Freescale was spun-off from Motorola in 2004 so it seems appropriate that he's joining a company that was spun-off from AMD at the start of the year. He has also spent some time at rival foundry Chartered Semiconductor.

As a semiconductor foundry, Global Foundries is looking to acquire customers from the fables semiconductor world, to add to its core customer - AMD. The embedded chip sector will be critical as the mobile Internet market grows and Freescale is a major player there. It's also a member of the ARM ecosystem, alongside the likes of Qualcomm, NVIDIA and Texas Instruments.

"The establishment of Global Foundries is creating a disruption in the industry with tremendous excitement around a new business model for global leading-edge foundry services," Dickinson said. "I look forward to partnering with leaders across the company to drive productivity by developing and leveraging tools on an enterprise-wide basis. Our unyielding commitment to quality will be a key differentiator for our customers."
