UK ‘green’ PC outfit VeryPC has launched the Janus II, which it claims is ‘the world’s most energy efficient server.’
The Janus II is a pair of 8 core servers in a 1U package, with each server idling at as little as 67W. VeryPC says that a typical 8-core x86 server idles at at least 150W.
VeryPC’s literature states: ‘The server has a resulting efficiency of 529 GFlops per KW. Whereas the most achieved by a similar server previously was about 290GFlops per KW.’
Here’s the spec:
One 90+ efficient hot swap PSU powering two Servers in a 1u footprint, each comprising:
- 2xQuad Core Xeon Low Voltage clocked at 2.5GHz
- 2x2GB ECC REG (native) RAM (up to 6x4GB)
- 4x2.5” HDD bays with RAID 5 or 10 support
- 1x2.5” 160GB 7200RPM Low Power Hard disk. (up to 4)
- 2x GBE
MD Peter Hopton thinks the Janus II is a good reseller proposition. ‘Janus II sets a new record for server efficiency,’ he said. ‘Assembled in Sheffield, the unit can be customised to the customers need exactly, minimising waste and logistical energy. Being operationally more efficient, Janus II provides good reductions in manufacturing energy, logistical energy and waste electronics."
Asked specifically why the channel should be interested, Hopton said: ‘We are currently taking on resellers and the reseller program has good margins, up to 25% for some products. We can provide equipment built to specification that can be sold alongside traditional vendors as a Green alterative.’
Hopton asserts that any price premium over a standard equivalent server will be more than recovered in energy savings over the life of the product. Also, free training is provided on products, on selling Green, Carbon Footprinting and calculating energy savings.
