Apple and Google

There was a fair bit of frothing on the web last week when Apple's market cap briefly overtook Google's. This was taken as indicative of the contrasting fortunes of the two companies these days, but Apple's share price has been at a pretty healthy level for a while now.

The most remarkable comparison for us is with HP and Dell. Apple's market cap at the end of last week was $155.68 billion, whereas HP's was $112.43 billion and Dell's was $50.64. So the combined value of the two biggest PC makers in the world is only just more than that of Apple.

Not all of this is down to things like the iPod, iTunes or iEverythingelse. The thing PC makers envy most about Apple is its ability to sell PCs at margins they can only dream about. On top of the debatable technical merits of owning a Mac over a PC, the secret to all this is style. Apple stuff is viewed, not least by itself, as cool and people are willing to pay for cool.

For this reason we can expect to see a lot more "cool" products coming out of companies like HP and Dell as they try to get out of the quagmire of commoditisation the PC industry finds itself in.

There were no other big movers last week, as markets didn't show too much change on the whole. However the picture still looked healthy for the tech sector, with the majority of companies posting gains.

Apple - the thing about their computers is not just that they are ‘cool’ they are seriously well built machines that dont lose value as fast and their day to day performance doesn't seem to have the drop that PCs do (although this is more to do with OSX). The main people who buy macs tend to be the media people who will be doing video and or photo work because a lot of this software seems to work better on OSX. A lot of people who freelance cant afford to buy something and then be stuck in the mud or have to upgrade down the line so they splash out and get the one time investment of a mac.

Macs come with OSX and thats the only way you can run it. Well legally anyway, there are ways round it with differentiating success although it will never be exactly the same until PCs start utilizing EFI. PCs can be put together by anyone and many people do, reaping the benefits of much cheaper computers with better quality coponants than that of DELL and HP…

Although my Macbook Pro is just as solid as the day i bought it even though i have chucked it about a little and installed tonnes of different proggys on it, I persoannly still prefer windows for some of photo and video work but final cut/logic/Quartz composer + VDMX are mac only.
I will never understand why Apple are viewed as ‘cool’ . It is a classic case of style over substance.
Only to a point. Whilst im not going to argue that they are not over priced because they clearly are, they are very well made computers that perform exceptionally well.

And they are cool there is no arguing with that really.
Apples are so much more user friendly. I have many non IT savvy friends who prefer their macbooks over their desktop PCs simply because of ease of use.
Basically, all the praise for Macs (other than the looks) is actually about OSX, and locking that down to their own hardware is what lets them charge extortionate prices.
