Benchmark: Crystal Disk Mark
CrystalDiskMark's 4K benchmark uses a queue depth of 32 to repeatedly transfer very small files, but there's a catch - a lot of the data used isn't compressible.
SandForce drives work best when the controller can exercise its DuraWrite compression technology, and though that isn't the case here, SSD performance remains head and shoulders above a traditional HDD.
Comparing the SandForce-based SSDs on show, G.Skill's 40GB Phoenix Pro comes out slightly behind Corsair's F80 in read speed and slightly ahead in write performance. There's little to separate the two, but OCZ's 120GB Vertex 2E has the edge on both fronts - all three drives are seemingly identical, but custom manufacturer firmware clearly make a difference.
Going back to the big HDD vs. small SSD argument, the 1TB Samsung drive may offer a 2,400 per cent increase in capacity offer the 40GB G.Skill Phoenix Pro, but the SSD in CrystalDiskMark offers on average a whopping 6,850 per cent increase in performance.
