System and Gaming Tests

The bottom line from the regular benchmarks is that one doesn't readily benefit from running higher-speed RAM on the Ryzen 9 3990X.

64GB vs. 128GB

Our standard benchmarks do not show a preference for 128GB of RAM over 64GB. That makes sense as their datasets are relatively small. Indeed, running the same benchmarks on 64GB vs. 16GB shows no clear limitation caused by capacity.

So, what about other applications? We ran RAM-intensive workloads on both Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 and Adobe After Effects 2020, to mimic what high-end digital studios may encounter on a daily basis.

Loading it with complex renders, getting past 40GB proved problematic. After testing a number of other applications, requiring more than 64GB for a single user in a non-virtualised environment needs specialist software. This is why, even with chips such as the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X, one needs to carefully evaluate its supporting components. Sometimes overkill is just that.
