Overclocking

The board has a good range of adjustments for overclocking. The following screenshots show the available ranges:

In addition to the BIOS options, you can adjust a goodly range of settings in Windows through the AMD Overdrive utility, which now supports the Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC).

AMD Overdrive has a clear and intuitive user interface, and makes overclocking your system easier than ever before.

To see if AMD's claims of improved CPU overclocking proved accurate we adjusted voltages up to a maximum 10% over stock, and ramped our Phenom 9850 X4 Black Edition up to its maximum stable frequency by simply adjusting the multiplier, and we achieved a stable 3206MHz, which is quite impressive considering in previous testing the highest our 9850 BE would go is 2.9GHz.

In addition, this was achieved using the lowly 300W power supply we use for testing IGP platforms, making it doubly impressive.

We will shortly be testing another 790GX board, the Foxconn A7DA-S, with greater focus on its overclocking potential and investigating just how far 790GX can go..

However it certainly appears that whatever magic AMD have worked with ACC, it's working.
