Benchmarks: Display

Some of the biggest advancements in modern laptops revolve around the capabilities of the display panel. To provide a more meaningful overview of panel characteristics, we're deploying Datacolor's Spyder 4 Elite professional monitor analyser to return a quantitative assessment of display quality.

Without a doubt, the display is the Aspire VX 15's weakest link. The TN panel, identified as BOE06BA, covers just 56 per cent of the sRGB space - one of the lowest scores we've ever seen on a 15.6in laptop.

Being able to display a wide gamut of colours is helpful, yet the colours themselves still need to deliver in terms of accuracy. In the above chart, the Delta-E figure corresponds to how close the displayed colours match up with real life and the lower the overall result, the better. Any figure below two is considered very good and the Acer is well short of that mark.

It is grim reading whichever way you look at it. Brightness is average, black levels are poor and so too is contrast. Some displays have one or two redeeming features and, yes, this one has a matte finish that helps minimise reflections, but that is offset by mediocre viewing angles, visible backlight bleed along the edges, and large distracting bezels.
