Doom
Absurdly violent and increasingly gruesome at every turn. It's fast, it's frantic, it's Doom. A game that needs no introduction to PC enthusiasts, this 2016 reboot brings hell's evil forces to life with updated visuals and is without a doubt one of the most eagerly anticipated launches in years.
We've tested Doom using OpenGL 4.5 (4.3 for AMD cards). Set to ultra and looking just lovely, performance is split into three broad camps. You have the older GPUs at the bottom, whose frame rate is just enough at 1080p. A collection of modern mainstream GPUs line the middle, and the very best fight it for bragging rights.
GTX 1060 FE finds itself firmly ensconced in the middle camp. We'd expected a little more performance from it in this title - it matches an overclocked GTX 970 - and QHD represents the best combination of image quality and resolution. A 10 per cent lead over the reference RX 480 is becoming standard fare.
The average and minimum frame rate numbers suggest that performance in Doom is handsome for both GPUs. The 99th percentile results back this up. At no point does the game slow down during frenetic shooting in an enclosed environment. Smoothness is key to the efficient dispatch of demons, of course.
For those geeks out there, the 99th percentile result for the Radeon's Doom and Dirt Rally performane is absolutely identical. Freaky, huh?
