3DMark is the latest version of this hugely-popular synthetic benchmark. Making use of DX11 features such as tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading, it provides modern-day results and is available as a free download.

The synthetic 3DMark test gets us off and running and we get a glimpse of the performance gains GTX 960 has to offer over GTX 760 and GTX 660. At a FHD resolution, the Maxwell part is 11 per cent and 40 per cent quicker, respectively, though it's the Radeons that pose a challenge, as the R9 280X and R9 285 both look comparatively strong.
