Overclocking tests
Overclocking is subject to a number of variables. The yield of the cores, the cooling employed by the manufacturer, ambient temperature and external cooling all play a part in defining just how far your card will go. Tyan's own overclocking utility was used to push the card. As the Radeon 9800 PRO is all about image quality and visuals, the test was to see how it fared at 1600x1200x32 with 4x AA and 8x AF implemented. That's where massive core clocks and huge bandwidth makes the biggest difference.
After what seemed like an age of testing, 433MHz core and 730MHz memory passed three entire loops of 3DMark without artifacting. A trio of benchmarks were re-run to highlight the increases in benchmarking performance.
Quake III first.
It can't displace NVIDIA's finest here.
The FX 5900 Ultra, no doubt helped by 256MB of card RAM, still manages to hold a very slender lead. A nice increase for the Tyan, though.
That's a bit better from Tyan's card. Wouldn't it be interesting if we could get a Radeon 9800 PRO up to 450MHz core and 850MHz memory speeds. ATi are planning something along those lines pretty soon. Let's wrap it up now.
