Benchmarks

AquaMark v2.3

First up in the range of benchmarks is the easy to use AquaMark. All the default settings for this bench were kept as the program intended. This is a resolution of 1024x768x32. Aquamark is based on the Aquanox 3D engine and uses DX8. We always say at Hexus that anything over 50fps is excellent with this benchmark so that's always something to watch out for.

As the graph shows there is very little difference between the Ti4600 and Ti4200 in terms of FPS. The GeForce3 Ti500 does drop behind somewhat, but I think the Ti4200 does exceptionally well considering this is supposed to be the slower little brother of the Ti4600.

3DMark2001SE

Second up I am using the very famous MadOnion benchmark program to bench the 3D performance of my system. This bench is similar to the Aquamark engine. It is based on DX8 and the default resolution is 1024x768x32. Anything over 8000 is an excellent score and is more than capable of handling any game on the market today and for months to come. A higher score is obviously better.

This score is nothing less than stunning. The P4 2.2ghz is definitely helping this card to shine but a score of 9633 without doing anything at all other than installing the card and its drivers in a fresh install of Windows XP is nothing less than amazing. The score is predictably behind the Ti4600 but well ahead of the Ti500.

Quake3 v1.30

Third up we have the industry benchmarking standard. No review would be complete without the Quake3 benchmark. As per usual this bench consists of the 3 runs at 3 different resolutions 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200. Results are displayed in FPS (frames per second) higher is better.

The different resolutions here help to demonstrate the true advantages the GF4 Ti range has over the older GF3 GPU. At lower resolutions the GF3 keeps up surprisingly well in the now ageing Q3 test. However at the higher resolutions the GF4's start to pull ahead with the Ti4200 sitting squarely in the middle. It would be interesting to see where the Ti4400 would sit here. Getting over 140fps at a top resolution like 1600x1200 is something gamers have been dreaming about for months now.

CodeCreatures Benchmark Pro

Again not a usual Hexus benchmark. This benchmark is very modern and taxes the graphics system very highly. Similar to the nature benchmark in MadOnion's 3DMark this should produce some very low scores but separate the men from the boys. This benchmark recommends 512mb of ram but I am running simply 256mb, hopefully this wont impact the scores too much.

This is a fascinating look at the future of gaming. This benchmark really does show the men from the boys. The GeForce3 here can hardly finish the getting a score and getting a rather pathetic 6fps. The Ti4200 manages to be twice as fast and get 11.9fps with the Ti4600 really gaining a good lead of 27.2fps. Obviously this is a benchmark heavily dependant on graphics memory speed as well as core speed.
